Filial Therapy Using Child Parent Relationship Therapy: Adding Parent Coaching to Your Play Therapy Practice

This course will provide an overview of the Filial Model using Child Parent Relationship Therapy, best suited for families with children 3-12 years old. The ten week play-therapy based curriculum, covered in this course, will provide everything a therapist needs to conduct Filial Therapy with families. Topics to be addressed are the history, foundational principles, selection of parents, facilitation, and practical considerations, each of which will equip therapists to effectively add parent coaching to their play therapy practice suite of services.   


Learning Objectives 
Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify appropriate participants for Filial Therapy and when this model is contraindicated. 
  2. List at least five Child Centered Play Therapy principles that are taught in Filial Therapy. 
  3. Recall at least 3 ways to facilitate Filial Therapy with parents using the Child-Parent Relationship Therapy curriculum, when adding parent coaching to play therapy practice.

About our presenter: Brenna Hicks, PhD, LMHC-S, RPT™ is a licensed, private-practice play therapist and is the owner of The Kid Counselor Center and The Family Counselor Center in the Tampa Bay area. The centers serve up to 225 families per week, offering counseling for the family at every phase of life. Brenna has been blogging and podcasting about play therapy and parenting since 2006, and has been featured in The New York Times, and on CNN and iVillage. She teaches play therapy courses for the University of Wyoming, and recently published her first book, Device Detox: A Parent’s Guide To Reducing Usage, Preventing Tantrums, And Raising Happier Kids. A native Floridian, she loves the beach, the sun, and Rays baseball with her husband and son.
