Puppetry and Storytelling Play Therapy Activities

Presented by Yolanda Fountain Hardy, PhD, LPC (GA), LCMHC (NC), ACS, RPT-S, NCC

What time is it? It is story time! Join us for an interactive learning experience that focuses on using puppets and stories to support and empower clients in play therapy. Participants will create puppets and practice crafting stories and puppet shows to aid in integrating play therapy theory and practice.


Learning Objectives: 

Participants will:

  1. Identify at least five benefits of using puppets and storytelling within the practice of play therapy
  2. Explain three storytelling types to assist clients in play therapy with identifying, processing, and resolving intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts
  3. Practice three puppetry and storytelling play therapy activities to enhance emotional intelligence, selfawareness, imaginative skills, and communication skills.

This workshop meets APT's definition of "Live Webinar."

Materials to have on hand:

  • Scissors
  • Glue or stapler
  • 6 popsicle sticks
  • Provided handout: Feeling faces puppets (Dr. Jean, 2009)
  • 3-5 puppets (owned or created with one representing a joyful time and one representing a painful memory)

About our presenter: Dr. Yolanda Fountain Hardy is a licensed counselor in the states of Georgia and North Carolina, a clinical and play therapy supervisor and trainer, a mental health forensic consultant, and a sand therapy specialist. She earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Mercer University and a post-graduate certificate in Working with Survivors of Violence, Torture, and Trauma from the University of Maryland. Over the course of her mental health career, Dr. Fountain Hardy has diagnosed, evaluated, and treated infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric clients with psychiatric disorders, histories of trauma, and experiences of complex grief in the public sector, private sector, higher education, and hospital settings. She presents locally and internationally and has taught master’s, doctoral, and medical students at multiple universities since 2011. She was also selected as a 2022-2024 Zero to Three Fellow. Dr. Fountain Hardy is the owner and executive director at Play Wellness LLC, the founder of the Child Loss Center Inc., and the President of the Georgia Association for Play Therapy

LIVE WEBINAR: Per APT guidelines, video cameras must be on throughout the presentation for contact CE. Participants will be awarded APT LIVE WEBINAR CE upon successful completion of a post test. This workshop meets APT's definition of "Live Webinar."

AZAPT is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education specific to Play Therapy. APT Approved Provider 97-035. AZAPT maintains responsibility for the program. Registrants understand and agree that any photograph, video or audio recording of themselves may be used to further promote AZAPT.

Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be requested in writing and received no later than August 1, 2023. Cancellations are subject to a $20 processing fee. Substitutions (someone else attending) or transfer of registration to another training date may be requested. No refunds after August 1, 2023.
