Superheroes and Pop Culture in Play Therapy

Presented by  Sophia Ansari, LPCC, Registered Play Therapist

We all have memories of using a blanket as a makeshift cape and jumping off the couch imagining as if we were flying high up in the sky amongst the clouds. Superheroes have been such an integral part of our childhood. The stories from comic books and pop culture media can offer a powerful analogy to frame our own experiences. Integrating a client’s interests in play therapy can nurture rapport building, encourage creativity, and can provide a safe distance to process emotions and gain perspective.

Superhero themes in play therapy can be used to assess a client’s inner resources, strengths, needs, and can provide valuable information in diagnosis and treatment planning.

This workshop will provide participants with creative play therapy interventions that integrate their clients’ interests. Learn how to help children and adolescents discover they are the heroes of their own stories!

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

    1. Describe the history of using superheroes in play therapy, its pioneers, and its effectiveness in the treatment of children and adolescents.
    2. Apply superhero and pop culture themes to play therapy interventions to encourage rapport building, social connection, and exploration.
    3. Discuss methods of introducing mindfulness and self-compassion using superhero and pop culture themes.
    4. Use valuable resources (web sites, books) to enhance your geek/superhero therapy knowledge in your play therapy practice to improve clinical outcomes.
