When the White Flag is Flying: Increasing Awareness of Healing the Burnout and Compassion Fatigue of Play Therapists

Presented by Cary M Hamilton, MAMFT, LMHC-S, RPT-S, NCC, CMHS

Burnout and compassion fatigue are central to play therapists experience right now. Play therapists are the container for so many and struggle to find a container for themselves. Burnout is real, both a physically and psychologically. Play therapists have the gift and knowledge of play and often struggle to apply it to themselves. We will review concepts of burnout/compassion fatigue, how play therapists can do true “self care” using the powers of play, and develop a “safety play plan” for the future. Play Therapists will gain awareness and knowledge for wellbeing during this era of COVID19.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe two key components of self-care for play therapists
  2. Conceptualize why it is important for the play therapist to engage in self care to decrease burnout and secondary trauma.
  3. Develop a plan for using play to combat compassion fatigue, and emotional burnout

Level of training: Foundational
