National Play Therapy Week 2022
Expressive Play Therapy Tools to Help Children Figure Out What’s Behind Their Anger presented by Althea T. Simpson, LCSW, RPT-S
Many children receiving play therapy treatment experience problems with managing their anger. This intermediate play therapy workshop was developed from an integrative framework to therapeutically help children who struggle with anger to manage their emotions. Anger may be a common reaction seen in play therapy sessions but is only problematic when it becomes uncontrollable, and children lose control of their behavior. As children become angry many physiological events occur that contribute to dysregulation often seen in children receiving play therapy treatment. Mental health professionals will practice 2D and 3D therapeutic activities that can be used in play therapy treatment with children experiencing anger management problems.
Useful Materials: art supplies (i.e., paper, markers, crayons, etc.) and LEGO
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Identify at least three causes of emotional difficulties in children receiving play therapy treatment.
- Identify physiological symptoms of anger that is often seen in children receiving play therapy treatment services.
- Examine the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in play therapy as an intervention for children with anger problems.
- Demonstrate at least two expressive treatment strategies to use in play therapy with children experiencing anger problems.
