NationalPlay Therapy Week 2021

Culture, Metaphors, and Play Therapy: Finding the Rainbows of Resilience through Life's Storms

Presented by Joyce C. Mills, Ph.D., LMFT, RPT-S

Trauma and attachment have been major focuses in our field of child, adolescent, and family play therapy in recent years. However, two areas often overlooked or minimized are the sociocultural view of how historical oppression and cultural resilience have impacted the healing process with children, adolescents, and families. Utilizing the resiliency-focused principles of Milton H. Erickson, Transcultural teachings, and elements of the StoryPlay® model, this play therapy webinar will provide participants with a socio-cultural lens through which to expand their ability to develop and utilize culturally respectful metaphors and creativity into their play therapy practice. Participants will be able to explore their own beliefs, spirituality, cultures of origin, stories, and traditions, and how they impact their work as play therapists.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:

    1. Activate a sense of hope and positive therapeutic attachment in the first play therapy session.
    2. Identify five cultural elements that impact our work as Play Therapists.
    3. Recognize, utilize, and nurture inner strengths as seeds for developing a storytelling metaphor for children and adolescents in Play Therapy
    4. Discuss a culturally respectful StoryCrafts that can promote healing in play therapy.
