Stages and Strategies: Play Therapy in Forensic Settings

Presented by Shefali Gandhi, PsyD

A brief overview of the needs of children who have experienced trauma in forensic settings, a thorough review of the stages of play based therapy in forensic settings, and trauma-informed play therapy strategies to use in each stage of treatment. The needs of children in forensic settings are unique and require an understanding of the systems of care involved in the treatment plan and protocol. Understanding the stages of therapy from a developmental perspective with a trauma-informed play therapy focus helps frame the treatment plan and goals. Identifying play therapy techniques, strategies, and tools to use during each stage of treatment enriches the treatment experience in forensic settings.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

1. identify the systems of care involved in forensic play therapy settings.

2. identify the stages of play therapy seen in forensic settings.

3. develop a tool box of trauma-informed play therapy strategies to use in forensic settings.

Level of training: Intermediate

About our presenter: Dr. Shefali Gandhi has been licensed by the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners since 2008. The goal of Dr. Gandhi's supervisory and clinical work is to create trauma-informed programs and settings in which families and providers understand the impact of ACEs, trauma, and toxic stress so patients can heal and grow successfully with a sense of completion and hope. Her ACEs/PCEs research hopes to strengthen the services that all advocacy and domestic violence centers provide in Arizona. Her work as the Director of Clinical Services at Childhelp Children's Center strengthened the trauma-informed clinical services team through treatment, consultation, supervision, and programmatic growth adding programs including sensory-modulation occupational therapy, an in-home therapy program, and a program specifically focused on treatment and outreach for children who have been victimized as a result of parental opioid abuse. She has testified in both family and criminal courts as the treating clinician and has been called upon for her opinion in terms of permanency planning and diagnosis. She has presented at national conferences on subjects related to School Psychology, Trauma-Informed Care, and Childhood Maltreatment. She is responsible for program development and sits on the nonprofit  Executive Board of the Mothers Awareness on School-Aged Kids (MASK). She was the recipient of MASK's Education Award, honoring community members whose efforts are dedicated to providing psychoeducation to children and families on current social-emotional challenges. She is a writer and columnist for MASK the Magazine, contributing a developmentally appropriate guide for parents and children on relevant social-emotional concerns for today's families to each issue of the magazine. She was a content developer and speaker for the Healthy Minds Group, developing and presenting continuing education course materials on family, male survivors, and trauma.
