Grief and Loss in the Play Room: Play Therapy Techniques

Presented by Jenn Pereira, Ph.D., LPC, LMHC-S, RPT-S

The training is designed to assist therapists in using play therapy based techniques to support clients and families who are dealing with grief and loss issues.  Primary and secondary grief and loss issues are seen frequently during play therapy sessions, therefore it behooves therapists to: have a solid understanding of the symptoms and effects of grief, how our child clients understand grief and loss, the ways in which play therapy can support coping skills, and have a repertoire of play therapy based techniques from which to draw.  We will also work to dispel the myths commonly encountered when dealing with grief and loss in child clients.

Learning Objectives:

Following this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the play therapy themes of children dealing with grief and loss (Primary and Secondary).
  2. Apply 2-3 play therapy techniques to the elements of grief and loss seen in the play therapy room.
  3. Identify ways in which play therapy and play therapists can support the family system with learning how to cope with grief.

Level of training: Intermediate

2 CEs toward the Techniques/Methods Content Requirement
