Play Therapy with Adoptive Families

Presented by Marshall Lyles, LPC-S, LMFT-S, RPT-S

This presentation will overview some commonly occurring needs of adoptive families presenting for play therapy services. The content will show how play therapists can take steps outside of client contact to increase sensitivity to possible dynamics related to adoptive families’ journeys, including deeper awareness of attachment complexities. Also, some adaptations to common play therapy skills will be discussed so that services can be accommodated to remain relevant to the shifting themes that occur throughout the treatment plan.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss common presenting needs for adoptive families seeking play therapy
  2. Discuss modifications to common play therapy skills to adjust for potential attachment-related presentations
  3. Apply attachment theory constructs to common play therapy clinical theoretical approaches

Level of training: Intermediate
