Addressing Intimate Partner Violence with Children in Play Therapy

Presented by Angela Catena, Ph.D., LMHC

This workshop explores the effects of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) on children, attachment styles, and caregiver relationships. Basic statistics addressing the prevalence of IPV exposure and effects on children will be discussed and interventions, both introductory and advanced, will be introduced to use in conjunction with already existing play therapy methods. A case study will be introduced and participants will discuss incorporating new skills into their existing practice.

FIVE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

  • gain a better understanding of the prevalence of intimate partner violence, its effects on children, and how this may be displayed in the play room
  • receive guidelines suggested by the American Counseling Association, including best practices, for play therapists working with children who have encountered IPV
  • learn how to incorporate various approaches into their play therapy repertoire when working with children exposed to IPV within the home.
  • learn how to adapt the Social Information Processing Model of Trauma to meet the needs of their children clients in play therapy sessions after being exposed to IPV.
  • become more familiar with resources and services available for children and families of IPV.

Level of training: Foundational
